Executive Director’s Report Recap – August 2026
At the August 13, 2026 meeting of the Sayreville Economic and Redevelopment Agency (SERA), Executive Director Himanshu Shah provided updates on several ongoing redevelopment and community initiatives, including continued construction at Riverton, the status of a federal transportation grant, additional support for Sayreville's youth recreation programs, and outreach to property owners within the proposed Raritan Street study area.
Riverton Redevelopment Update
Construction continues to progress throughout the Riverton redevelopment site. Significant work is underway at the Bass Pro Shops location and within the Gateway Services area, while construction at QuickChek is also moving forward. Work has also begun on additional pad sites throughout the development.
Members of the Sayreville Borough Council toured the Riverton site on July 17, giving Councilmembers an opportunity to see the progress firsthand. The Riverton team provided an overview of the project and its history before leading the group through the development, including a walkthrough of the Bass Pro Shops facility.
Federal Transit Administration Grant
SERA continues to work with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to advance a 2022 federal grant that will support a multimodal transit study for the Riverton Project.
Following a recent conference call with the FTA, SERA submitted the documentation required to advance the grant through the federal onboarding process. The Agency is currently awaiting confirmation that the necessary documentation has been properly submitted before proceeding with the next steps.
The process has experienced delays in recent months due to evolving federal guidance and changing administrative requirements, particularly regarding civil rights compliance.
Once confirmation is received, SERA will be able to continue advancing the grant and ultimately access the funding needed to complete the multimodal transit study.
Additional Support for Youth Recreation
The August meeting agenda also included a resolution authorizing an additional $63,000 transfer to the Borough of Sayreville to support its youth recreation program.
Since the elimination of recreation registration fees, participation in the Borough's youth sports leagues has increased significantly. Removing the financial barrier associated with registration has allowed more children throughout Sayreville to participate.
The growth in participation has also resulted in additional costs for the Borough. SERA's contribution will help offset a portion of those expenses and support the Borough's continued efforts to make youth recreation programs accessible to Sayreville families.
Raritan Street Study Area Outreach
SERA recently contacted property owners within the proposed Raritan Street study area to provide information about the redevelopment process, the potential benefits of redevelopment designation, and opportunities redevelopment could create for the area.
The outreach also addressed the potential benefits associated with a Transit Village designation. With the NJ Transit Park and Ride located in the area, the location is particularly well positioned for potential transit-oriented development around existing transportation infrastructure.
Looking Ahead
SERA continues to advance redevelopment initiatives while working with the Borough and its partners on projects that support Sayreville's long-term economic development and community needs.
